COMMENT:
I was born in Lawton Oklahoma. My Father
was in the Army and 6 months later, our family moved to
Bobenhausen, Germany where we lived until about 1956. We then moved
to Lexington Kentucky where my father taught Military Science at the University of Kentucky.
In 1958 my father retired from the service, and we made our final move back to
Lawton, where my parents owned a house, and where my mother's father's
sister and brother (Ed and Nora Jones) lived.
I graduated from High School at Oklahoma Military Academy in 1970
In 1976 I graduated with a Bachelors of University Studies from
Okalhoma State University with concentrations in art and business.
From 1976 to 1979 I built a house 11 miles south, 2 miles east,
and 1.5 north of Stillwater Oklahoma, and my two children, Carson and
Jennifer were born there.
In 1979 I started an Oil Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma called Prince
Petroleum and drilled many gas and oil wells in southeast Oklahoma.
I operated the oil company until 1984.
In 1985, I moved to Penland North Carolina I worked as the Registrar at
Penland School of Crafts.
In 1987 I was offered a fellowship with the National Endowment
for the Arts in Washington DC, and moved there. I was later offered
a job with them as the Deputy Director of the Information Management
Division, and I bought a house at 5752 Biscayne Drive in Alexandria,
Virginia.
In 1994 I left the NEA and started an ISP in the DC area. Neptune Interactive.

As per Catharina Hoelscher: July 93 Letter

He emigrated to the USA twice. The first time was in 1869. The
second time was in 1882. When he came with his wife and little
daughter, Anna Margaretha. In 1869, at the age of 17 he came with his
cousin, Frank Meggers, who was 19 years old. Their destination was
Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, where some uncles on the Jones side were
living. Naturally, he had to look for work. He worked for a farmer,
then at a logging camp in northern Wisconsin, and finally at a sawmill
at Clinton, Iowa. He worked there and saved his money until he had
enough saved to go back to Germany in 1872 or 1873 In the meantime,
Bismarck had become Chancellor of Germany, and instituted Compulsory
Military Training. Peter wasn't home long before he had to leave for
military training. Other soldiers were always eager to hear him tell
about America. During his last year of military training, he and
another soldiers were aides to the officers. (see picture) During his
entire life, Peter had a fine posture-something emphisized by the
military.

As per Catharina Hoelscher: July 1993 letter Married Catharina J”ns of
Klein Rheide. they had tow children who lived to adulthood. Anna
Margaretha, and Jrgen Frederick.

Served with Company G, 30th Indiana Infantry during the War Between
the States.
My father (Elden Ernest Evans) told me the story of having seen a
picture of this man, in a Gray Conferate Uniform. All the family
thought it odd that he, a Northerner would have served on the Southern
side.

Elden took the picture to a man at the Fort Sill Museum of Military
Uniforms, and it was in fact identified as the uniform of Company G,
30th Indiana infranty, a Northern Army.

It was common at that time for each militia, or state army to have
its' own uniform, and many of them were gray.

COMMENT:
As Stated by Donald F. Evans:
My Grandfather was a telegrapher for the railroad, and at one
time was the station master at the Rock Island Station in Jet
Oklahoma. The old timers there still refer to him as "Depot Jones". I
still have the "bug" he used to send the morse code. I also have the
American Flag that he was buried under, as he was a WWI veteran. Grace
used to tell me stories about him puting his model A ford on the rail
road tracks and driving it to Enid. Since he knew the train
schedules, he could do that.
One afternoon, he came home from the station, and complained
about a head ache, he asked Grace to call a doctor. They had no
phone, so she went next door to call. When she returned, he was dead,
apparently of a brain annurism.
When WWII started, my father went to Europe, and Mother went to
live with Grace and Frank. My Father was in France when Carolyn was
born. Grace never completely forgave him for taking her only daughter,
and then going off to war, and they were at odds for the rest of
Grace's life.

Oklahoma to be with Graces Great Aunt Mollie Miller and work on the
101 Ranch."

COMMENT:
As stated by Donald F. Evans:
Grandma used to tell me about Tom Mix, the famous silent movie
star. He worked on the ranch, and then made some movies at the ranches
studio. (The silent movie "The Cherekee Strip" was filmed on the ranch
by the studio). Grace told me of buggie rides on the prairee and
picnics with Tom. On her death bed, when I visited, she looked up and
said "Tom, you came to see me." I assume she meant Tom Mix.
She also told me about knowing Bill Pritchett, the famous
Choctaw/Negro cowboy who worked on the ranch, and be came a star
attraction in their wild west show.

COMMENT:
As stated by Donald F. Evans:
David B. Carson of Rock Castle County, Kentucky was a plantation
owner, and had at least two children. Mary Ann (Mollie) Carson, and
George W. Carson. After the War Between the States, many former land
owners left and moved down the Oregan trail westward.
Mollie Carson, married Col. George W. Miller of Crab Orchard
Kentucky, and headed west with a wagon train of neighbors, including
George W. Carson. George and Mollie loaded thier only possession
which consisted of three wagon loads of cured hams, with the intent of
selling them to the hungre pilgrims on their way west. They stayed
for a while in Kansas trying to peddle the pork, but no one had any
money. George heard that the cattlemen in Texas couldn't sell their
beef since the end of the war and were desperate to trade for
anything. He loaded up the hams, and returned with an entire heard of
cattle which he sold and put on the train in Kansas. The route he
established would latter be called the Chislem Trail. Along the way,
he would make friends with many of the Indian tribes in the Indian
Territoriy, and this would set the stage for his many trips to come.
They later established the 101 Ranch in North Central Oklahoma, which
was to become one of the largest ranches in the history of our
country. They also had a wild west show, silent movie studio,
circus, oil company. The ranch they founded riveled anything the
South had ever seen, and was completely self sufficient with it's own
refinery, rail road spur, telephone system, and mail service.
After making several trips to Texas with Col. Miller, George W.
Carson continued on to Wyoming, and had a son, George Felix Carson.
They also set up a large ranch on open range territory and raised
sheep. George Felix Carson had a daughter Grace Leilia Carson, who is
my grandmother. When she was about 2 years old in 1900. The black
leg swept through the country, and killed all their sheep. They lost
everything, and moved back to Crab Orchard Kentucky for a short time,
and then joined the Millers at the 101 ranch.
Aunt Mollie took Grace under her wing, and even sent her back
East to a finishing school. Grace used to tell many stories about
the wonderful balls at the "White House", what they called the huge
antibellum house they had errected on the plains. The entire top
floor was a dance floor, and the dinning table would seat 100 people.
So the story grows....

After the Civil War, Col Miller left his plantation in Kentucky, with
his only possession several wagons of cured pork. He traveled to
Kansas, and set up shop with the idea of selling the port to hungry
pilgrims on their trip west. The pilgrims had no money, but he soon
learned that the cattle men in Texas were having such a hard time
getting the cows to market, because of the civil war, that they were
willing to trade cattle for almost anything.

He took the port to Texas, and traded it for a herd of cattle, drove
them back to Kansas, where he put them on a train to the east, and
made a small fortune. He had established one of the first cattle
trails north, this one would be called the Chislem Trail.

He became friends with the Pawnee Chief and latter rented large tracks
of their reservation to fatten the cattle up before the final drive to
Kansas.

The Family also ran the Miller Brothers Circus, which still tours
today, had a moving picture studio, where the silent Cherekee Strip
was filmed, and Tom Mix the famous Silent Movie Cowboy worked there as
a ranch hand until discovered.

Comments:
As per Elden E. Evans notes in Family File:
Born 8-11-1843 in Richland County, Ohio, was the fourth of ten
children. The family moved to a farm in Steuben County, Indiana, near
Ashley-Hudson (north of Fort Wayne) about 1859. (This was only about
30 to 40 miles from LaGrange county where Ernest Evans was born and
lived until he moved to Oklahoma.) John Shorter moved to Michigan
where he operated a sawmill near Edmore. He met and married Alice
Danford. he was ruined financially when the sawmill burned. The
Family then headed west, staying awhile in Kansas, then settling on a
farm 13 miles southeast of Kinfisher, Oklahoma. After John Shorter's
death (2-5-95), his widow with seven children moved to a farm 1 mile
north and 4 west of Hillsdale. Alice married Andy Armstrong (6-97), a
nearby farmer. John Shorter is burried in the Kingfisher Cemetary in
Kingfisher, Oklahoma.

Dear "Cousin"Isabel Evans,

My Carson Family, generally, refers all queries to me.

The trouble with the Carsons is that there were carsons and there were
Carsons and all claimed kin to Kit Carson, which is probably true but
more distant than most of us want to believe.

It will take some work in the court record of Rockcastle and other
kentucky counties, but I believe you'll find that you are descended
from David Carson Sr. (1741 - 1804) who is buried in Rockbridge
County, Virginia. Two of his sones moved to Rockcastle County,
Kentucky, Samuel and David. David Carson Sr. was very distinguished.
His descendents claim kinship to Kit, but it is not in a direct line.

I would like to hear from you further. Our Carsons are kin to Kit and
kin to David Sr., but we are not a direct line either. We are,
apparently, from a Samuel Carson who died in Berkely Co., Va., --
1798.

COMMENT:
As per Donald F. Evans 7-10-1993
Great Aunt Mollie (Mollie Isabelle Carson) told me in her letter
in the family file that her father George Felix was born in Crab
Orchard, and had a sister named Claudia, and a brother named John. I
feel the above Census record is actually for George Felix's Father.
Previously I had believed the father to be one George W. Carson
of Lincoln County Kentucky because of letters from my father (Elden E.
Evans) but I now believe that to be wrong.

QUESTION:
As per Donald F. Evans.
I have assumed that Eliza A.'s last name is Myers, simply because
of the mention of a nephew (Olliver Myers) living with the family,
this is not a good assumption, and needs further verification.
